Opportunities for smaller law firms

I follow a number of blogs and today I received an e-mail regarding one of those blogs.  I find Tom Kane's Legal Marketing Blog interesting.  In his post today, he discusses an ABA Journal Online article that says the economic times are creating more opportunities for smaller law firms.  This is very exciting for us smaller firms!

Car Accident -- Part 1

On October 10, 2010, at 12:20 a.m., my vehicle was struck by a drunk driver.  A very drunk driver. In fact, she was over .15 on the Breathalyzer.  I am grateful that my passenger and I were able to walk away from the accident with some minor injuries (our backs and necks are in lots of pain, but no broken bones).  It is also a good thing that I have a safe vehicle.  While I am still waiting to hear what the estimate of damages will be from GEICO, I do know that my car looked 10 times better than the drunk driver's car.  I'd venture to say her car is a total loss.

This is very interesting, since I am used to assisting my client's through their process.  I now have the "opportunity" (I am trying to be positive here) to experience first hand what my clients experience after they have sustained property damage.  I'll also post some pictures of the property damage in the coming days.  Stay tuned!

Citizens Property Insurance Corp -- has the bad faith bubble popped?

The First District Court of Appeals has ruled that the bad faith lawsuit against Florida's one and only "State Created Insurance Company" continue to trial.  For full details, as well as a copy of the Court's opinion click here.  We have to keep a close eye on this one... it could be a game changer.

For those of you that do not know, Citizens Property Insurance was created by the State and as such, has special protections which  no other insurance company doing business in Florida is afforded.  Why is this important?  Because it means Citizens can do what they want and get away with it.  What?  Yes, unfortunately, there is no law to punish Citizens when they fail to act in a good faith manner.  The case described above might change it all.  Stay tuned....

Alex Sink, FL CFO, goes after Scammer

Scammer from Miami, FL  gets hauled into jail.  Ms. Hernandez, at the mere age of 23, opened a corporation with the Secretary of State and named it Citizens Property Insurance Inc..  Yes, this was done on purpose to confuse individuals and companies sending payments to the Florida Insurance Company - Citizens Property Insurance Corporation.  She stole $12,000 before she was arrested and faces up to 4 decades in jail.  I wonder if she thinks it was all worth it now?

Interestingly, I had seen the company on sunbiz and thought it was very odd.  Glad that they caught her early in her operations, as this could have been devastating to thousands and thousands of Citizen policyholders.  If you sent a payment to Citizens between June 24, 2010 and June 29, 2010, make sure you contact Citizens IMMEDIATELY!  You can also click here for frequently asked questions regarding this ordeal.

Tropical Depression 12

It does not look like Tropical Depression 12 will have any impact on Florida.  At least from today's forecast on the National Hurricane Center's website.  Its been an active season and we are just a little over half way through.

Hurricane Igor

From the looks of it, Florida might be safe from another HURRICANE!  According to the National Hurricane Center Hurricane Igor is up to a Category 4.  We'll definitely have to keep an eye on this one.

Welcome :)
